EXPRESS YOURSELF | Rules and Regulations

The Express Yourself Contest (“Contest”) is operated by the Regional Municipality of Peel (“Region of Peel”) through Region of Peel Health Services in partnership with the following organizations:

  • The City of Brampton
  • The City of Mississauga
  • Brampton Safe City
  • Malton Neighbourhood Services
  • SafeCity Mississauga
  • Rapport Youth and Family Services
  • Punjabi Community Health Services
  • Elizabeth Fry Society of Peel-Halton
  • Nexus Youth Services

The contest period begins on March 26, 2012 and ends on May 1, 2012.

Eligibility

The contest is open to an individual or a group of individuals 12 to 24 years of age who on the date of their entry are residents of Peel Region.
 
All individuals must sign the Consent and Release to participate.

Individuals who are under 18 years of age must have their parent/legal guardian sign the Consent and Release to participate.
 
All submissions must be original works of art only.

Age Categories

Contest entrants will compete in one of two age groups:

  • 12 to 16 years of age
  • 17 to 24 years of age

For group submissions, the average age of the entrants will be used to determine the age category.

Contest Questions

Entrants are to answer only ONE of the following two questions:

What can be done to prevent youth violence?
OR
How does youth violence impact you?

The issues must relate to one of the following forms of youth violence: School Violence, Bullying, Dating Violence, Cyberbullying, Gang Violence.  

Entry and Submission Requirements

1. Submissions may include the following:

  • Drawings/Sketches
  • Painting
  • Photography/Digital images
  • Poetry/Song lyrics
  • Video (1-minute maximum)

2. Only one submission is permitted per individual or group.

3. Submissions can be uploaded electronically to voice4peelyouth.ca or dropped off to the following locations:

  • Region of Peel - 7120 Hurontario St., Mississauga – Access Peel
  • Brampton Recreation Centres and Libraries – Please call Lindy Greenhalgh at 905-874-5321 to make arrangements for drop-off.
  • Mississauga Recreation Centres and Libraries – Please call Lisa Boyce-Gonsalves at 905-615-3200 ext. 5479 to make arrangements for drop-off.
  • Malton Neighbourhood Services – 3540 Morning Star Drive, Mississauga - Reception Desk

4. Required formats:

  • Drawings/Sketches/Paintings: An original piece is required.
  • Photography: All major formats; jpeg (or bmp); 10 MB or less in file size
  • Written poetry/song lyrics: Original piece should not exceed 400 words.
  • Audio submission: 1 minute or less mp3 or wav. file
  • Video: 1 minute maximum, please e-mail the URL or link to your video (ie. YouTube, Vimeo, etc…) or put the video on a USB flash storage device.

5. Entrants are required to complete a Participant Entry Form and include contact information, a brief description/explanation of their entry (maximum 75 words). The Participant Entry Form must be completed in English; however, the submission can be in a different language.

6. Submissions must be received in person by 4 p.m. on May 1, 2012 or via e-mail at 11:59 p.m. that day.

7. All submissions will become the property of Region of Peel, Health Services.

8. The Region of Peel reserves the right to modify or disqualify submissions that exhibit sexuality, nudity, derogatory terms, profanity, homophobic or racist comments.

Prizes

An individual winner or group will receive a gift card from a store of their choice in Peel Region for the following amounts:

The 1st place winner of each age category will receive $300.
The 2nd place winner of each age category will receive $150.
The 3rd place winner of each category will receive $75.

Please note: For group submissions, the prize amount will be split between all the individuals in the group.

Selection of the Winner(s) and Notification

The winner(s) from each age category will be selected by May 3rd, 2012. Submissions will be judged based on a set of criteria including originality and creativity.  To win a prize, the potential winner(s) must meet all eligibility requirements and fulfill of all the conditions described in the rules and regulations. If the potential winning entrant(s) cannot be reached by the end of 4 (ten) business days following the selection, or has not, or does not, comply with the Rules then another potentially winning entrant(s) will be chosen from the entries received during the Contest period. The winner(s) should receive the prize within 3 weeks of confirmation that all required documentation has been returned. 

Contest Event

All contest participants will be invited to a ‘Showcase Event’ on May 11th, 2012 where the winners will be awarded their prizes and select contest entries will be displayed.
